History of Cornerstone
The Legacy of Dr. Judith Buys
Cornerstone Family Dentistry was founded, and lovingly built to what it is today, by the late Dr. Judith Buys. In her own words:
“After coming to Peterborough in 1985 I looked forward to owning my own dental practice. I set my sights on the north end of town as this is where my husband and I had moved to. The area was new, young and full of potential. While driving home I noticed this small house on the bend which I felt would be a great place for a dental practice. Some people may remember the home as the owners sold Christmas trees for many years.
My husband and I purchased the property in 1986 and proceeded to convert the beautiful home into a functioning dental practice. It was small but quaint. We had three small rooms to operate out of. The staff of four found that there was no need for an intercom as we could easily communicate together. It was like family.
Over the years the practice grew and it became time to expand our office. In 1991 the large expansion took place. This enabled us to have four more rooms to treat patients, gave us a larger reception area and provided room for lab work and staff areas. We were all so proud. We now had an office of three dentists along with an expanding support staff. The area was bright and spacious allowing us the room to treat patients in a warm and comfortable atmosphere. Many will remember the forest that was created in the reception area allowing the children attending the office to play in a magical land.
In 2007 we completed our last renovation. It was essentially a makeover with the structure remaining relatively the same. We moved into digital radiography and fully computerized the office. We were one of the first dental offices to go paperless in Peterborough and have continued to strive to provide the most current treatments in dentistry while maintaining sound ecological practices. We try where possible to respect our environment using as many green initiatives as we can.
Now we come to the present. It is again so exciting. A new name for our practice. Cornerstone Family Dentistry. A name derived from much thought and input from all involved. The commitment to patient care remains, as always, our priority. We will continue to examine the new innovations in dentistry and will introduce new ideas when we feel they will benefit our patients. We will continue to provide dentistry in a comfortable warm home. Where that takes us I don’t really know. What I do know is 681 Reid St will always remain that little house on the bend.”
Cornerstone Today
On August 16, 2016, we saw the great loss of Dr. Buys. This was an unimaginable loss for the Cornerstone family, one we will never forget. However, we feel the best way to honour Dr. Buys, and her life’s work, is to continue to strive for excellence, and to continue to provide dedicated care to our patients in a friendly and caring environment. We find great comfort in knowing the clinic and our patients are in great hands with the new owner Dr. Anna Jo and we are confident anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting her, would agree.
Dr. Jo feels honoured to be able to continue the legacy of such an individual and her much-loved dental clinic. She understands the patients and the team have been with the practice for many years and she looks forward to building those relationships.
As we move forward, just as Dr. Buys said many years ago, we will continue to provide dentistry in a comfortable warm home, and while where that will take us no one really knows. But what we do know is that 681 Reid Street is and will always remain that little house on the bend.
